Range for Radio controlled payload drop system

I am trying to build a Payload drop system for my drone. I am going to use it to drop live bait out off the beach to about Maybe 1/4 of a mile out. Now, I want my Drone controls and payload drop system completely separate.

So I am needing info on what combo can I buy that will give me that kind of range. I will be using an E-flite payload servoless release unit. On to an off and on switch to receiver and battery and of course a transmitter. what kind of receiver and transmitter would you recommend?

I do not want a huge battery because my full payload on drone is about 2.5 lbs. any suggestions? My email is xdeputy101@yahoo.com Thanks!
