P-51 MUSTANG TRAINER

by Bill Berry
(Belpre Ohio)

Im looking for any members that are/have flown the P-51 Mustang trainer with the 8cc Evolution motor.

How does it fly? hows the 8cc motor run ? How easy is it to land on a low cut grass runway? Any info will help im thinking about getting one of these in the near future !

Thanks Bill

No Warbird is a good trainer
by: rcdude07

I'm 31 years experienced in the hobby. And Personally, no warbird of any kind is a good trainer. No matter the changes made to the airframe, it's not a forgiving airframe, flies faster than a beginner can typically handle, and is much harder to land.

Do yourself a favor and get something like a T-28 Trojan if you want a trainer and a warbird.

That's what Ive heard but Ive been lying for 4 years so i know how to fly just wanted an easier war bird to try. The evolution 8cc gas motor is my main concern on how trustworthy it is.
Thanks Bill

Combustion Engines are unique
by: rcdude07

If you've been flying for 4 years, you *should* be progressed enough to handle this airframe well. Just really depends on what you are flying now. Combustion engines introduce their own tendencies and aggravations. The hardest part is getting the motor properly broken in (typically several fuel tanks need to be ran through at a rich setting on a specific prop size). The engine will have a manual to go through this process. After break in the hardest part is tuning the engine to run smoothly. I'm a long time nitro guy and can speak for tuning a nitro engine. Gas engines are a bit less finicky due to weather changes and produce less fuel residue during flight.

If you fly with a group of guys/gals (especially at an AMA chartered club) ask them about gas engines and the Evolution brand. Evolution brand is a subbrand of Horizon Hobby, so you'll get great customer service support from Horizon if needed.

I fly a DLE20 gas on my TWIST 150 but no one at field has this brand of motor everyone at our field that fly gas fly the DLE brand. gas is a lot less finicky then NITRO--BUT nitro was my first trainer.
