There are so many brands of airplanes (E-flite, Top flite, FMS, Freewing) which is the best?, i.e. most realistic warbirds, most reliable, etc.

The answer to your question depends on your budget. Bigger balsa planes perform better than smaller foam planes. Any sub brand under Horizon Hobby is a great brand. Hobby King and Banggood can be hit or miss with electronics. If you want reliability, replacement parts, and customer service, then pick anything in the Horizon Hobby house.
