tuning a towerhobby pro.46 glow engine

I have a trainer plane. It is equipped with a towerhobby pro.46 glow engine.

I started to fire up the plane for the first time this year. The high speed setting I had it set at last year doesn't seem to run right. It sputters and cuts off as I increase the throttle.

I'm told to set the high speed screw to 3 turns out and then the booklet says factory setting is 1 1/2 turns out. What is the proper setting to start at?

Use the "Pinch" test
by: Matt

Hi Joe,

If your engine is sputtering and quitting, it sounds like it may be too rich.

Those recommendations you speak of are only the "starting" point. Every engine needs to be "tuned" depending on the type of fuel, nitro content, atmospheric pressure, temp, etc, etc, etc. In other words, there is no magic position for the high speed needle that will make your engine in tune.

Try the pinch test

If the engine speeds up quite a bit when you pinch the fuel line, then it's too rich. Turn the needle in slightly.

Keep performing the pinch test until the engine only speeds up just a tiny bit when you pinch the line.

If the engine doesn't speed up, but dies immediately, it is too lean. That's bad! If this happens, turn the needle out just a tad.

It is very important not to run the engine lean, as it will damage the engine. So you always want the engine to increase in speed ever so slightly when you pinch the line.

I hope this helps,

Let me know how it turns out!

Good Luck!

Matt
