Tiger .46 INVERTED questions

Hi all,

I’m still working on my P-51 with my new but old model Tiger.46. Few months ago Matt and others helped me tune in the engine.

THANK YOU

Over all, I’m pleased with its settings. It passed the pinch test, and the slow idle test, its good.

But I’m concerned about its reliability especially at low speeds and idle.

New Problem:
Now the engine is inverted and yes it has to stay that way.

It is difficult and unpredictable to start.
Glow Plug gets flooded easily on failed starts. Glow plug is a A8.

Once the engine is started, high rpm’s have no issues.

However, at idle it dies on occasion maybe 5 to 10% of the time. No warning, it just dies and the glow plug gets flooded.

I read here that these are known and very common issues when inverting an engine. But I’m hoping that maybe someone may have some new tricks or read about some possible solutions for these problems.

One article I read stated that a “F” (long) glow plug helps/or works better with inverted engines. Another article suggested buying a onboard glow igniter to keep glow plug hot during idle and low rpms.

Has anyone heard of the above suggestions and/or has tried them? If so what do you think?

Primarily, I’m wanting to secure the aircraft as best as I can from low rpm stalls while in flight or final approach. But also when the engine stalls on idle or a false start it creates a headache because I have to remove the glow plug each time to dry it out.

Any suggestions???

Thanks Bill

Thanks for the input. It does seem like that is a good way to go no matter what. If nothing else an on board glow igniter is good for that peace of mind as a backup for a hot plug. I have not read that much on the specifics of an on board igniter, so needless to say I do have many questions. I'm still concerned about the easy flooding of my glow plug and am not sure if the on board igniter will resolve that issue. It should but...

I think I will start a new post on the on board igniter. In the mean time, if anyone has any additional ideas about my original question, please write on this post.

Thank you all.

Glow plug problem
by: Bill

It seems to me that an on board glow igniter is the best solution. I don't have experience with them but have read several articles about that kind of problem and it supposedly has always cured the problem. I think you can set it to come on only on low throttle settings. Why look for another solution?
