thanx for the great rc airplane site

by Ulrich Smit

Hello,

I actually just wanted too say - I have actually learned a lot from reading through here. Thanx!

I decided to get into the hobby last year - bought myself just a Blade CX2 RTF heli too start off with because I didn't really have anyone too teach me too fly a plane.

About two weeks ago I at last decided to go and buy a plane since my gf's brother flies and I will be able to join him on their farm every weekend when weather permits.

So I went and, at that stage, got a deal on a hangar 9 Ultra Stick .40 . Decided on that and yes - the weather just hasn't worked along for me to go out with the people from the shop too madain the plane and too learn how to fly. I only have hours of practise on FS One - hope that is going too help me.

The perspective in the sim just seems a bit weird - judging distance etc. So now I'm still waiting and hopefully not too long - I'm really eager too fly.

Regards & thanx for the great site Ulrich Smit

and so we learn
by: Ulrich

Yes and so we learn the hard way the something doesn't fix itself - doesn't matter how hard you believe it will.

HAHA I couldn't help laughing and smiling when I read the part about the Blade 400. I have been itching for one ever since I read about it. I have always loved helicopters. One day I will probably be lucky enough to buy one.

At the moment I'm in that part of the year where college fees needs to be paid, car serviced, licence renewed etc etc. So I'm going to have to hang on before I buy something now a while longer.

That Sukhoi seems nice and I agree with that it would be a nice plane to start of with to practise 3D since an electric won't just quit on you. This was the reason I was having a look at a profile...but was adviced against getting one. I also own the Stryker, but the 27B (C-version has not yet been released in South Africa) - it crashed the other day after the prop just came of mid air (still a mistery). I tried to bring it in as close as possible to me, because I was to lazy to walk, lol and for the first time ever the thing stalled on me and snapped the edge of the aileron and wing off - nothing e-poxy can't fix though. This is my fun plane - We just do stupid things with it...it got a paintball right through the wing the other day hehe.

You've been busy!
by: Matt

Sounds like you've been busy!

Isn't that the strangest then when you know the engine isn't working right, but you just can help yourself from taking off and trying anyway, hoping that it somehow magicly fixed itself and you want have any problems? I've done that a few times. The desire to fly over rides common sense sometimes!

I bought me a Blade 400 heli. Crashed it first flight, didn't even get off the ground all the way when it tipped over breaking the parts...

Got it fixed, this time I decided to build a training gear set. I was doing pretty good scooting it along the ground. Even hovering for a decent about. Then of the legs of my "home made" landing skid fell off and it tipped over, blades hit HARD!

I had to order parts to replace just about everything pertaining to the main blades. Plus it damaged 3 of the 4 servos!

I ordered parts again. And ordered a REAL training set. If I crash it again right away I'm going to have to stuff it in the closet for a while I think before this thing sends me to the poor house.

You want to learn how to hover but afraid of engine failure? I suggest taking a look at Great planes E-performance Series

I just recently got the Sukhoi and it rocks!

Sukhoi

I had to learn the hardway to let the motor cool off completely in between flights. Went through 2 motors before realizing this...

Progress
by: Ulrich

Hi

The heli...:D...well lol it's still in one piece - we have modified it a bit to be able to push it a bit further to the extreme. Have lost a couple of blades, body is a bit worn (nothing cellotape can't fix) and I managed to hang it up into a tree trying to go through bushes and trees - great fun.

Well as you know I started with the Ultra Stick, I flew it only about 16 times and had a blast with it - it really is an amazing plane and it flies very well. Then I bought myself a Green Models Edge 540 (46 size). It was one of those - go into the LHS, see the plane, buy the plane moments :) . I sold the Ultra Stick - very dissapointed with myself for doing that - but nothing one can do about it now.

I put the ASP 46 engine and all the components from the US into the Edge. I went out to taxi it, it was hot that day, but I the excitement was too much. The engines piston and sleeve went but I only realised it the next day. It died just after take off a couple of feet from the ground - I got it around and put her down only bending the landing gear a bit. The next weekend we tried again after adjusting the engine...here I learned if it doesn't work on the ground it's not going to work in the air...took her up and it died again only this time I wasn't prepared for it and it stalled. I managed to get away with just the firewall breaking out on the one side - nothing major. Then I put in an ASP 61 2 stroke engine. Got it back, flew it the first time with the engine a bit too rich, but it flew great.

Here's a video link of that first flight, I was so nervous:

The next weekend was suppose to be a long weekend and on the first day a hit a tree - head on. Had to rebuild the firewall, but that has all been fixed and I'm now on my 18th flight on the Edge. I'm enjoying it a lot. I wouldn't say I'm near good - it's not even been a year. I can do fairly a lot of maneuvers now. I want to get into 3D, but the idea of hovering and the engine quiting or something like that still scares me lol :).

But thanx again for all the info you share with others.

What's up?
by: Matt

Hey Ulrich!

How's the flying coming along? Your heli and ultrastick still on one piece?

Have you moved on to bigger and better planes? Just curious!
