Sig LT-25

A great advantage of building this trainer is when it comes time to repair, one has the full size plans and all balsa construction to work with. I've seen this plane repaired over and over again when similar damage sends an ARF to the trash can. In the age where ARF's are often more cost effective than a kit plane, the LT-25 may be an exception because repairs are simple. The LT-25 is very lightly loaded and needs no more than a .25 engine. The benefits to training are that it is equivalent in size to a .40 size plane but flies considerably slower and thus offers easy visibility and that all important extra reaction time needed when training. It's also one of the few tail dragger trainers so avoids the pitfalls of tricycle gear on grass and rough fields. Because of the light loading, the glide slope is so shallow that flaring on landing isn't needed, just cut the throttle and let it settle down. Another plus for the beginning flier is the use of rubber band wing mounting so that catching a wing tip won't ruin the day. Flight characteristics are ideally suited to those required of a trainer with the one exception that ground handling is initially slightly more difficult because it's a tail dragger. But that is a reasonable trade against the travails of nose gear on a grass or rough field.
