SC46 engine won't rev higher than 8000rpm

I have had a SC46 engine for a few years. It has always run fine and revved up with plenty of power.

Recently it has gone a bit sick and won't rev. A friend put a counter on it and we see it is only revving to 8000rpm.

No amount of carb adjusting could get it to rev higher. I tried changing the fuel from straight 20% castor to one with 5% nitro. Doesn't make any difference.

One of the club guys mentioned "varnish" build up inside the engine. So I tried stripping the engine and cleaning the piston and liner. Stripped the carb and cleaned everything.

Any advice on what can cause my engine not to rev. I am a bit reluctant to buy a new piston and liner at 50% of a new engine cost if it is something else.

How about bearings?
by: Michael from Oz

G'day

Assuming that (1) the carby is opening fully, (2) the prop is the same and is not unbalanced, (3) the plug is OK, (4) there are no leaks in the fuel system

then ...

How about the bearings? It is quite easy to pull the back plate off and have a look in the back of the crankcase. Look for rust, dryness, metal bits etc.

And have a feel of the engine to see that with the plug out it still has some "nip" at the top and also that it turns very smoothly.

With prices as they are these days, engines like this are not really repairable once things get worn. Might just be time for a nice shiny new one.

Changing bearings is not difficult to do if you have the right tools and a bit of knowledge. RC-bearings.com have bearing sets at very reasonable prices.

Check fuel tank and lines...
by: Anonymous

Have you checked the fuel tank? Fuel lines, tubing and clunk installed properly with no air leaks?

Check the tank for leaks?
