RC Airplane beginner needs advice

by Chuck DiRienzo

Hi,

I just purchased a Electric Super Cub LP from Hobby Zone, and I have had 3 short flights and my issue is I seem to be struggling with keeping the airplane level and in the direction I want it to go in.

I have practiced with a Flight Simulator for over 20 hours but when I get my hands on the real thing I struggle with it. My landings are ok although I had some damage to the cowling, but that is all can you tell me what I am be doing wrong?

The super cub is a light RC plane- so it may be the wind is moving it around.

Also the stick movement needs to be very small changes. It may be that you are over correcting. RC airplanes are very responsiveness. You needs some use some finesse with the sticks.

When you're practicing on your simulator try cranking crank up wind and wind gusts. See if that helps you prepare better for flying your airplane.

Stick toward low wing

Some really good advice I got was you put the stick in the direction of the low wing to level it out. That way you dont have to try and think about it. Good luck and happy landings!

up elevator in turns
by: Matt

That is good advice moving the stick toward the lower wing, but that is ONLY when the plane is coming TOWARDS you. Just want to clarify. lol

If your plane has ACT, I recommend turning it off and see how you do. Many people claim that the ACT actually gets in the way.

The main thing you need to remember and do instinctively is always always always feed in up elevator in turns. Once this becomes instinct you will do much better.

Not TOO much elevator as it will cause the plan to stall...

Super Cub....

Howdy Chuck...I know what you mean about the Super Cub and what it does(or doesn't) do. I bought one about a month ago. If it's a real windy day, it a battle to control the plane because it's so light and as mentioned before, the ACT seems to be more of a problem than a solution....I disconnected mine and it seems to act a little more civilized. But , for sure don't put a lot of input into the control surfaces because the weight of the plane makes them real twitchy....and fly on a perfectly calm day..

Advice for beginner RC pilot
by: kenny

Before flying your RC airplane for the first time, make sure your trims are centered. With the stick centered make sure that all moving parts of elevator & rudder are centered with the non moving parts. If they are not then adjust the clevises in or out to center them.

A plane doesn't want to turn when climbing. Remember when flying into the wind add some down elevator.
