power loss OS 46ax

by mike

Hi,

My OS 46ax has lost power? reason.

I didn't use it over winter, then have not been able to get it going well since. I can fly it but prob the best I have got to is about 75% of former power using 20% nitro, and once I go back to 10% nitro it is marginal to take off with a full tank.

I've tried changing glow plugs, tuning high and low end. The needle valve setting doesn't seem to make a lot of difference to the engine rpms, like it used to as I remember.

There will be a change, but it is sluggish and minimal, even with a full turn of the needle. Otherwise it idles fine etc.

Any thoughts?

I don't know what else to check on.

Rust?
by: MIchael from Oz

G'day You don't say what sort of oil you were using. All synthetic or part castor or all castor. You do say you were using 20% nitro which is quite a lot.

Could it be that when you put the engine away, it was not totally dry inside and that the bearings have become rusty while in storage? It is easy to pull the back plate and have a look inside for evidence of rust. Does the engine feel completely smooth when you turn it over? Any roughness is not good

The more nitro you use, the more likely it is that you will have rust problems. A bit of castor helps even a couple of percent. It also helps protect the engine from damage in case of a lean run.

Bad Fuel?
by: Matt

Hi Mike,

Have you tried using new fuel? Or has this fuel been sitting around for the winter?

It is possible the fuel has gone bad, or gotten moisture in it.

Just thought...

Matt
