Need recommendation for On Board Igniter

by Rob

Hi all,

This is a spin off question that originated from my other post titled "Tiger .46 INVERTED questions".

Simply put, I'm looking for recommendations on a tested, reliable, ect, on board Igniter.

Did some web surfing and found lots of adds and do it yourself kits but not allot of input from people that actually used them.

This is for a Tiger .46 engine that is inverted. Ideally I'm looking for an igniter that will not only keep the glow plug going at low idle but also has enough juice to be used in starting the engine.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks

Hi Rob,

Here is a link that shows a diagram of a RAM on board glow igniter.

As you see, can you plug both the igniter and throttle servo into the throttle channel of the receiver so the igniter only comes on when the throttle is low.

If you think this is what you're looking for, you can pick one up at Hobby People fairly cheap.

RAM On-Board Glow Driver/Igniter (w/1300mAh cell)

Or as Michael from Oz suggested you could just purchase a Sub C cell and leave it one the entire flight.

Hope this helps,

Matt

put engine up the right way
or try tank height
tune it leaner or as above
make a switch to work off servo so sub c is only on at low rev
if you find sub c is not lasting a flight

Try a Sub C cell

G'day I had an old OS 70 Surpass which was a bit difficult to handle and so to get some time on it in the air with a minimum of fuss and cost, I simply wired up a Sub C NiCd cell of about 2000mAh capacity with a switch. The cell was powerful enough to start the engine and I then simply left it on for as long as I was flying. I did not damage any plugs and the engine idled perfectly. All you need is some sort of clip to connect to the plug, a connection to the engine some wire that is heavy enough and a decent small switch. Works a treat and costs very little.
