My Saito FA72 will not run at full throttle...

by Robert
(USA)

I just bought a new Saito FA72. I am able to get the engine to idle just fine. When I get to 1/2 throttle it still runs OK.

When I try running full throttle it boggs down, but it is still running. So I run the high speed needle in to get it to pick up. Then it dies.

So I restart the engine and turn
the needle out. I try to go full throttle and it still dies.

During this whole process I do not "mess" with the low speed valve. I am very frustrated. I have
heard nothing but good news with Saito engines but would be happy just to get this engine running.

If you have any suggestions they would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you,

Robert

Bad tach
by: Robert

The tachometer I have been using was ancient, so I decided to buy a new one. Problem solved!

It's amazing how something as simple as a faulty RC airplane tachometer can cause so much frustration and headaches!

Thanks for your recommendation, it sure pointed me in the right direction.

Try using a tachometer
by: Matt

Robert,

If the engine picks up when you turn the high speed needle in, then it is running rich. Sounds like you my be turning it in TOO far.

If you're not using a tachometer, I highly recommend that you purchase one. It's fairly easy to hear when a two stroke engine reaches max RPM's. But it takes a "trained ear" to determine when a four stoke reaches max RPM's.

Once you get a tach, turn the high speed needle in until the engine reaches max RPM's. Then back it off just a little bit.

It is also possible for the low speed to be off, even though you haven't touched it. If the above procedure doesn't fix your problem, then you may need to adjust the low speed needle.

The manual that comes with the engine should tell factory settings for the low speed needle. This is a good starting point.

Good luck,
