Mixing Glow Fuel

Is mixing glow fuel difficult? I would like to know if it possible to make your own custom fuel without it being to complicated?

I would also like to know if there are substitutions for any of the necessary substances used in glow fuel.

A friend and I were discussing Diesel Engines and how it is possible to run a diesel engine on vegetable oil. Initially someone had to experiment like the wright Bros. with RC fuels before it became a product.

Anxiously awaiting a reply!

Mixing glow fuel? No worries.

G'day

I mix my own fuels both glow and diesel.

For mixing glow fuel you will need oil, nitro (if you want to use it) and methanol. Both nitro and methanol can be had from speed shops that sell to car racers and some oils can too.

I use two types of oil - castor and synthetic. I use Klotz 200 synthetic and castor I get from my local model shop. I also get my nitro there. I buy methanol from a local fuel supplier.

I mix my fuel in litres because it is very easy to so and I am in Australia. My standard mix is 10% nitro, 5% castor oil, 15% Synthetic oil and 70% methanol. I use this in all my four strokes and two strokes. The castor is there as insurance against rust and lean runs. Castor is a much better lubricant than synthetic when things go wrong.

If you mixing glow fuel in ounces, then you will need to do a little math.

Diesel fuel needs Ether, Oil and Kerosene. You could possibly substitute the kero for a vegetable oil but you still need the ether. The basic mix is equal parts but I use 20% oil, 30% ether and 40% kero plus 1 or 2% of an ignition improver such as Isopropyl Nitrate.

Does this help?
