Hitec Servos

I have a question regarding Hitec servos. I'm thinking of buying the Multiplex Mentor and there is a sight called rc universe that has a breakdown of the assembly process.

On one hand, the author said he used HS 475HB servos for the rudder and stab and used HS 85BB servos for the ailerons.

In another part of the article, he mentions the Hitec "servo pack" which has 2 HS 322HD for the rudder and stab and 2 HS 81 micro sevos for the ailerons.

What is the difference between the different sets of Hitec servos?

Thanks in advance...

Two different prices
by: Michael

G'day

Hitec servos are pretty easy to work out. The ones with two numbers are the small compact servos, the 55 being the smallest "micro" servos, the 81/85 being "mini" not quite so small servos and the 300 series being the standard size. 400 series are standard size but more powerful.

At this point I wish I could see your question but it is not visible any more so I may get some of this wrong.

Basically he has suggested two alternative sets of servos to use. The one with the 475 (which has now been replaced by the 485) is the more powerful, more expensive set. The 322 set is a lower power cheaper set.

I don't know the plane you are talking about but if it is a 40 size plane with a glow engine, I would go for the more expensive set. If it is electric, either would probably be ok.

I generally use the 422 as my standard all around servo. If I want something better I use the 425 which is the ball raced version. If I want more torque than I use the 475/485. If I want really serious torque I use the 645 for quarter scale models.

Hope this helps a bit. I really like Hitec servos and have only ever had one dud out of about a hundred. It was DOA.

Thanks for the info, Michael. The plane is a Multiplex Mentor electric with approx 65" wingspan.

Not sure of the size classification..

Hitec servos
by: Jeff

Pete,

The Hitec servos the article mentioned are all in the 'standard' category as far as power goes. Like Michael said, the ones with two numbers are smaller in size.

As far as the two configurations mentioned the 81 and 322 have slightly less power but are a little faster. Whereas, the 85 and 425 have a little more power but are a little slower. Neither one of which would make a difference on this size/type of model.

The thing I would make sure of is the mounting dimensions for the aileron servos. The reason he listed the mini servos may be due to the size of the pre-cut holes for them to mount into.

I also agree with Michael on the Hitec servos. They are a quality servo, and the only failure I have had has been due to crash damage. Follow the link below to see all the Hitec servos listed with their specs. You can also click on the individual servos and get more info and an idea of the pricing differences.

Hope this helps and good luck with your plane. The mentor has had some good reviews.
