Help with remote control airplane school project

by Russel

Hi,

My name is Russell and i am a student.. One of my project work this semester is to build a remote control aircraft, which should be able to take off and achieve stable flight for a minimum of 100m. It should have a wingspan of about 3 or 4 feet..

And since i am not much into RC stuff, could you help me with it please... I'm planning of building it with balsa and could you help me with some design and build plans and maybe a step by step way of building it...

I know its too much of an ask but i seriously need your help and will appreciate your help greatly.. Thank You in advance

A kit would be your ticket!
by: Matt

Hi Russel,

I would suggest that you build a kit. A kit has all of the balsa wood pre-cut and it has a set of detailed directions and plans.

They are really fun to build, and the directions are usually very clear.

There is a picture of my Super Chipmunk in various stages of completion here. This page also explains what is involved with building an RC plane from a kit.

However, building this bird is only half of the battle. Actually flying it is the hard part.

Where do you live? I am sure there is a local club close. Since the weather if finally getting nice, it would be a good time to visit the local club and those guys can teach you to fly and give you some one on one advice. Who knows, you may find this a fun hobby!

If you are allowed to use a kit, you should build a trainer. This page shows the most popular trainers.

You could also build an ARF, but I am not sure if your teacher would approve of that. But they may never know. But an ARF stands for Almost Ready to Cover and all of the pieces are built with balsa and covered. All you have to do is assemble it.

Putting an ARF together takes about a week working at nights. Putting a kit together can takes months. If your really fast maybe one month.

My first balsa plane was a Sig LT-40 Kadet ARF.

Let me know if you have any more questions. I'd be glad to help.

Matt
