Help with a Nexstar ARF conversion to electric

Hi.

I'm a brand new "newbie" to the hobby & I need some direction.

I bought a Hobbico Nexstar ARF & I want to build it with electric power. I've read all the conversion charts. I have the motor and batteries on order.

Here's where I need help.. How and where to install the motor. Where to create a hatch on the fuselage for easy access to the batteries etc.etc.

In short...I need some guidance on how to physically build the thing. HELP!!!!!

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

You can send it direct to me at leeowen@zoominternet.net.

Best regards, Lee Owen

Hi Lee,

I understand what you mean about just wanting to put something together yourself. It's half the fun of the hobby.

You can pick up a brand new cowling on eBay:

Thanks Matt. I appreciate your ideas. I elected to go with the ARF for a couple of reasons. First...I wanted a better radio (Bought a Spectrum DX7) and I wanted to buy the motor & batteries of my choice. Most importantly...I just wanted something to "putz" around with as I learn the basics on my East Star. I hope I can find that cowel you mentioned. Lee

Oh man, shoulda got the electric Nexstar

Hi Lee,

I can't help to wonder why you didn't just pick up the electric version of the Nexstar. Guess that would have been too easy :) Just kidding, I'm sure you had a good reason.

I would suggest taking a look at the manual for the electric version.

Nexstar EP Select Manual

If you look closely you will see that the electric version has a small box built on to the fire wall for the motor to mount. You will have to build a similar box an make sure it is secured to the fire wall firmly with glue and notches of some sort.

You will probably want to order a cowl that is made for the electric version, and cut the cheeks off the fuselage.

If you haven't opened anything, I would recommend taking it back and getting an electric version.

If that's not possible, you will need to find someone with the electric version and get details on that box that mounts to the fire wall so you can build one.

Its very important to make sure the thrust angle of the prop is correct.

The manual for the electric version will also show you where to make your battery hatch.

You say you are brand new to RC, Congratulations and welcome to an awesome hobby!

Since you're new, I assume you are going to get some help from an experience flyer. Do you plan to join a club?

I am sure someone at your local club has the electric version of the Nexstar. Its a very popular plane. Ask around, and I am sure you can find one in order to get more details on that box.

Let me know how it turns out or if you have anymore questions.

Thanks!

Matt
