Evolution .40 on a Alpha 40 engine problems

Hi all,

I bought a Alpha 40 from a friend a couple months back and I have been trying to get it running right since.

When I get it 1/2 throttle it is fine but any past that and it bogs down. I have tried the high speed needle valve all the way in and still the same.

When I do a pinch test when I have the high speed at the leanest it then goes full speed and when I let off it bogs down again.

I have tried taking the valve assembly apart and all seems fine. Any ideas?

There has to be a way, as I don't want to buy a new motor, but if I do once this one is running fine I can put it in a different plane if I continue the hobby.

Don't think you need new engine.

Hi Mike,

I know how frustrating it is when you have tried absolutely everything you can think of and the darn engine still won't run right. But with enough persistence you will eventually figure it out.

Since you are not the first owner, you don't have the advantage of knowing the history of the engine, whether it was run lean, abused etc. So you are a bit of a disadvantage. However, buying a new engine is generally not the answer unless there is something wrong with the engine for sure.

Eventually you will have similar problems with the new engine, and if you keep buying new ones whenever they won't cooperate eventually you will have a garage full of engines! Not that I would know or anything, lol...

So it's best to get to the bottom of the problem so the next time it happens with future engines you will now how to fix it!

Was your friend having any problems with the engine before he sold it to you? If not, I suggest you have him take a look at it and help you get'er running right.

Can you clarify your comment below a bit:
When I do a pinch test when I have the high speed at the leanest it then goes full speed and when I let off it bogs down again.

What do you mean by "let off"? Let off the tubing while doing the pinch test?

When you say you have it at the leanest, what do you mean? You should adjust the high speed so the the RPM's raise just slightly when you pinch the tubing.

If the engine RPM's increase A LOT when you pinch the tubing, then your are running way to rich.

Usually a glow engine will sputter and carry on before it dies if it's too rich. Where as it will just stop abruptly if it's too lean.

If you could try to explain exactly what is going on with the engine a bit better I think it will help to get your a better answer. I don't really see the big picture clearly with the description you provided.

Thanks!

Matt
