Hi Matt,
Thanks for your comment, you're a big help to my engine dilema. I think the engine is okey now, have flown it last sunday, two flights. fortunately never encountered any engine failure. But still crossing my finger because i still have to install the cowl, although i put a 1.5-inch hole directly in front of the head, hope this would not make any problem. Installed this engine on my 50-size groovy pattern plane, also have a classic 60-size aurora and 60-size pegasus all pattern. never ecountered this problem on these plane's engine.

Thanks
Alfredo

sound like heat damage
by: M

Hi Alfredo,

You say the engine got so hot it smoked. Then you say the compression is much better with new piston and ring. I'd say there is a pretty good chance the engine was damaged by running it lean, especially when you say the piston and ring were melted together.

Running this hot could have been damaging the glow plugs as well. Are you still having problems with glow plugs now that you are running with more fuel?

It is sometimes difficult to hear the change in RPM's on the low speed during a pinch test. You may want to pick up a tachometer to help with the low speed.

What kind of plane do you have? Have a picture?

Engine OS 50 sx keep on quiting

Hi Matt, thanks for your advice.

i ran again this morning the engine but only after i have change the piston, conrod and ring and the compression is much much better than before and i think its okey now, only that during idle the engine's rpm slowly decrease and eventualy dies.do the pinch test on high speed but having hard time on the low speed.

also, is there any reason why my plug #8 often got busted, using methanol and castor wt 5% nitro. the engine was installed on my new pattern plane and don't want to compromise it with failing engine.

Before i changed piston assmbly, the ring was seized on the ring land and could not even move it, the top of the piston is somewhat like rough, seems like its getting melted, is this a sign of ruined engine due to running it lean? please advice

thanks, alfredo

Can't run a glow engine lean....
by: Matt

Hi Alfredo,

If your engine is getting hot then there is a very good chance it is running lean.

I urge to read this entire page very carefully. Perform the described pinch test to make sure the engine is not running lean.

I glow engine does not have a coolant system with a radiator and water pump like your automobile does. A glow engine uses the oil in the fuel to remove the heat from the engine.

If you don't have enough oil running through the engine, the engine will overheat and could damage the engine.

If the engine is ran too lean for very long, it could actually ruin the engine. Hopefully it is not ruined, but if it has gotten as hot as you describe there is a definite possibility.

Please read through the page I mentioned. Use the pinch test to make sure the engine is running a little bid on the rich side and see how it does.

Good luck...

Matt
