E-flite Pitts Model 12 15e ARF

Me, my son, and my new Pitts!

Me, my son, and my new Pitts!

The first flight of my E-Flite Pitts Model 12 15e ARF had my heart pumping just like the good ole days when I was first learning to fly!

A few weeks ago I bought my first bi-plane, a great planes ultimate. I removed the electronics from the same size Sukhoi. After several days of work she was almost ready to fly. Then the unthinkable happened...

My X-acto knife slipped and punctured the battery while trimming the cowling to accept the battery. I watched in disbelief as she went up in flames. Nearly $400 up in smoke. I was pretty bummed out to say the least… You can see a picture of what's left after the disaster on this Facebook Thread.

After a day of sulking I figured the best way to get this past me was to buy a new plane. There’s always a silver liner, since I had to buy all new components I wasn’t confined to choosing a plane that required the same size components of the Sukhoi!

I took the advice of David Pender from the above Facebook thread and purchased the E-Flite Model 12 15e ARF.

I used an E-Flite Power 15 950 Kv Brushless Outrunner Motor
,4 JR MC35 Micro Servos,an E-Flite 60-Amp Pro Switch-Mode BEC Brushless ESC from my smashed ParkZone Habu.

I also went a head and bought a new Spektrum DSM2 AR6200 6-Channel Receiver so I could add some aileron differential, which was not possible with my the AR500 receiver from the Habu.

So far I've only flown with an 12 x 6 prop. I also have an 12 x 8 prop that I will probably use when after I get more comfortable flying her.

Assembly

I did run into one issue when putting it together. After bolting the motor to the firewall I discovered that the shaft didn’t stick out past the cowling far enough to allow the prop to clear the cowling.

Instead of going through the trouble of making a ply or wooden spacer, I kind of took a short cut. I put a couple washers between the motor and the firewall, and also a couple washers right behind the prop. I had to cut off the nose portion of the fake radial engine in the cowling.

I kind of wish I would have taken the time to add the spacer, but its too late now. This doesn’t affect the way it flies, but the radial engine would have looked better had I added a spacer.

While attaching the control rods from the bottom to the top ailerons, I accidentally broke off the wooden arm on the right aileron. So I had to cut this piece out and glue the end of a servo arm in its place.

The rudder and elevator servos holes seemed way to large for the recommended servos. To be honest, I actually thought it was a defect at the time until I got online after the fact to see how others dealt with this issue. So I glued in a couple of small play pieces to bring the servos even with the surface of the fuselage tail.

Here is a picture of some parts that I didn’t use. I have no idea what they are. They weren’t mentioned in the directions. Anybody know what these white plastic cylinder parts are for?

Batteries

I ordered a Thunder Power 2250mAh 4-Cell/4S 14.8V Pro Power 30C LiPo recommended by Horizon Hobby for $80. I also ordered two Rhino 2150mAh 4S 14.8v 30C Lipoly Packs for $24 bucks a piece. Weighing 24.1 grams, The Rhino's are actually lighten than the 24.8 gram Thunder power packs. I can sacrifice 100mah capacity for 25% of the price any day!

Since I have limited my first few flights to 5 minutes to avoid dead stick landings until I am comfortable flying the Pitts Model 12, I am not in a position to come to a final conclusion about he comparison of these two batteries. Unless there are huge differences in flight times, seems like the Zippy Rhino's are a no brainer…

Intense First Flight!

A month or so ago I crashed my Habu. The same week I nose dived the Sukoi. A week later I burned up the Great Planes Ultimate. So you better believe I was very nervous about lifting off with the new Pitts Model 12 15e ARF!

The wind was kind of gusty, but I didn’t think it was a big deal as I flew my Sukoi in much more wind on a regular basis. So here we go, all or nothing…

I feed in throttle and watched her climb to the sky. She actually climbed and veered left right into the sun. I couldn’t see anything. My heart was in my mouth!

So I decided to make a left turn instead of right as I had planned and she came out from behind the sun, I could breath again. I finally got her into the flight pattern and got her trimmed, but man was the wind having its way with her!

I was only in the air for maybe 3 minutes and I couldn’t take it anymore. Complete nervous wreck. So I decided to bring her in for a landing. I never knew that biplanes were affected by wind like this. She practically came down almost completely vertically, I some how managed to sit her down every so gently.

Oh man, I’ve been flying for a while, but my heart hasn’t pounded like this while flying for years! I sat there and waited about 45 minutes watching my son play in the stream at the park until the wind died down.

I was much more relaxed the second flight, but still never took her off low rates. She flies like she’s on rails! I came back the following day and tired the high rates. It’s going to take me a little while to get completely comfortable with this one.

Not sure if it’s the fact that she’s a bipe, or because I was nervous due to my recent track record, or what the deal was. All I can say is that I LOVE adrenaline surges, it’s what makes the hobby so fun!

Plastic thingies
by: Jeff Sergent

Hey Matt, can't tell much about their density from the photo and don't know how many it came with. My guess is they may be cut to length motor mount spacers. Of course they neglected to tell you about them in the instructions.lol I know we use hardwood dowels as stand offs on gas engines when we need an extra inch or so of clearance.

spacers?
by: Matt

So would these mounts go between the firewall and motor with the mounting bolts going through the center?

Maybe that's what they are, but they are definitely not cut to length if that's what they are.

Spacers
by: Jeff

Not sure. That's just what I thought of when I saw them. Yeah, that's what you would do. Cut them to length and place them between the motor mount and firewall. I drill a center hole in dowels and use them as spacers often. They're strong and a lot cheaper than machined aluminum spacers. Plus I don't like to get too long without boxing them in for lateral and rotational strength. This is a lot easier with wood.

Motor Spaces
by: Ben

I also have this plane and after building many eflite planes, this has by far been the worst in terms of quality and ease of build.

The plastic tube are the motor mounts. Their should be an ammendment document in the box that says use these as motor mounts. It also says DONT us ethe ca hinges that came with the plane. The are to weak.

Anyay, I will hopfully finish building mine soon. So many issues.

Agree directions need to be more clear!
by: Matt

Hi Ben,

I agree the directions should have been more clear about those mount spacers. I didn't know what the heck they were either.

If I am not mistaken, it seems to me like they later provided some better hinges after the directions were written because I used the hinges that come with the kit, they looked fine to me and I've had no problems...

If it is any consolation, this bird flies really well once you get her put together!

Have fun!

Servo Covers
by: Ben

Hi, Did your servo cover slots have issues? Mine both are forward facing and on the right. I would have thought that they would be forward facing and on the outsides. EG looking form bottom, left servo cover has left slot and right has right slot. Both mine are left. Also, the servo's were to big, and I had to cut a little out of the plane to fit. A little disappointed with the quality and thought gone into the design. Usually all eflite plans have been easy to build and well designed. Everybody seems to have issues with this one.

Don't remember having two of the same servo covers
by: Matt

I don't really remember having two of the same servo covers. I do remember having to work with the aileron servos to get them to fit right, mine were too big also.

Not too many problems really stand out to me on this except the motor spacer issue. But I am kinda used to running into every problem imaginable every time I assembly an ARF... Murphy's Law is seems to be strictly enforced in my garage, lol

So unless its a HUGE problem it doesn't really stick in the memory too long...

Reinforce Landing Gear
by: Matt

I did some research before getting the E-flite Pitts Model 12 15e ARF and I run upon a thread on a forum that suggested reinforcing the landing gear.

The guy said he had a friend who put one together and the landing gear got ripped off on the first hard landing.

So I reinforced it quite a bit with gussets and epoxy cloth. I highly recommend you do the same...

Room for battery
by: LP

I'm thinking of buying this biplane, but there is something keeping me from buying it, that is that i have a few 4S 4350 mAh batteries, and i was wondering if they will fit into that airplane?

battery dimensions
by: Matt

If you give me the measurements of your battery I can check it with mine to see if it will fit.
