AMA Pattern Engine Size Restrictions?

by Jim
(Naples, Fl)

AMA pattern used to be restricted to .61 2s or 1.2 4s. I can find no info on current size limits.

Is there any? I have been out of the hobby for 15 years and would like to get back in. I have the chance to purchase a "U Can Do" 60 size with an OS .91 2 stroke.

Can I use it?

No longer a restriction on engine size
by: Matt

Hello Jim,

Back in the mid 90's they changed the rules a bit. Instead of restricting the engine sizes of our F3A planes, they put a restriction on the size and weight.

If you take a look at the F3A Synopsis page you can see the rules as they are today. In summary an F3A pattern ship can have a fuselage length of no more than 2 meters and a wings span of no more than two meters. The overall weight is limited to 5 kilograms.

So to answer your question Jim, there is no longer any F3A (or AMA) restrictions on engine sizes for pattern planes.

The "U Can Do 60" has a wing span of 65" (1.65M) and an over all length of 68" (1.72M). So this plane is F3A legal and you can use any size engine you'd like.

Good luck to you my friend!
