After Run Oil

What is the best product to use for after run oil?

I live in Canada in Alberta and during the winter months I normally don't get a chance to fly so my engines sit for a long period of time. In the spring when I get them together to fly I find the engines full of gunk and in some cases the engines even begin to seize up.

I was wondering what kind of after run oil should I use that won't damage the seals or cause problems when starting in the spring.

Storing engines

Best to run engines dry then use some after run oil.

I use Automatic Transmission Fluid which is essentially the same without the big pric etag and the label that says "After Run Oil".

I remove the glow plug, put a few drops in, then replace glow plug and put a few drops in the open throttle.

Close the throttle and spin the prop a few times to dist the oil. Close the throttle and you're all set.

You might also try War Department Formula 40. Also known as WD-40. Specifically designed to protect missle components from moisture and corosion over time in storage. Works great on model engines too!!!

Storing your plane

One of the biggest problems you face is the gumming effects of glow fuel. If it's just going to be a few months then the tranny fluid solution is the best thing to use as after run oil.

But you need to address the fuel tank if the storage will last any longer. For long term storage you will need to remove and flush the tank. Alcohol works the best. Any more than a year and putting new lines on the bird is the best route.

I have a few birds that I'm saving for my grandson and a complete clean job is in order. It is a lot of work but when you bring it back out again it will be worth the effort!
